Granite is a natural igneous stone quarried from the earth and cut into slabs. Its mineral composition creates the movement, color, and pattern seen across its surface.
No two granite slabs are identical. Even slabs cut from the same block can have noticeable differences in veining, color distribution, and mineral deposits.
That variation is granite’s main design advantage. It allows the countertop to become a natural focal point instead of a manufactured surface with a repeated pattern.
It also means the final slab should be selected carefully. A small sample cannot show every feature that may appear across a full countertop. For kitchens that require multiple slabs, the designer and fabricator must plan how the patterns will meet at seams and corners.

Dekton is an ultracompact surface manufactured by Cosentino. It is made from a blend of minerals used in materials such as glass, porcelain, and quartz.
During manufacturing, those materials are exposed to intense pressure and heat. The resulting slab is dense, nonporous, and resistant to many of the conditions that commonly damage kitchen surfaces.
Dekton comes in controlled colors and patterns, including designs made to resemble marble, concrete, and other natural materials. Its consistency can make it easier to coordinate countertops across a large kitchen or create a specific design without the unpredictable variation found in natural stone.

Appearance is the most personal part of the Dekton vs. granite decision.
Granite is formed rather than printed or manufactured. Its color and pattern extend through the material, giving exposed edges and cutouts the same natural character as the countertop surface.
Depending on where it was quarried, granite can contain subtle speckles, sweeping movement, bold mineral deposits, or dramatic shifts in color. This makes each installation distinct.
Granite may be the stronger choice when the countertop is meant to serve as the kitchen’s main visual feature. It also works well in designs that benefit from natural texture and tonal variation.
The tradeoff is predictability. The completed countertop may contain visual characteristics that were not visible in a small sample. We prefer to review the actual slab when granite plays a major role in the design.
Dekton provides greater consistency between samples and slabs. That can be useful in kitchens with long countertop runs, large islands, or several surfaces that need to coordinate.
Its controlled appearance also supports designs that call for restrained movement or a specific color not commonly found in natural stone.
Some Dekton designs reproduce the look of marble or stone more convincingly than others. Pattern treatment can also differ at exposed edges and cutouts, particularly when the surface design does not continue through the entire slab.
For that reason, we review the full slab, edge detail, thickness, and fabrication plan together. The surface pattern alone does not tell the whole story.
Both materials are durable enough for a busy kitchen, but they respond differently to impact, fabrication, and maintenance.
Dekton has excellent heat resistance. According to Cosentino’s Dekton kitchen and bath information, the surface is designed to resist high temperatures and thermal shock.
Granite also performs well around heat because it is a natural stone formed under extreme temperatures.
Even with a heat-resistant countertop, we recommend using a trivet under hot cookware. Pots and pans can carry grease or grit that damages a finish, and sudden temperature changes may affect seams, sealants, or nearby materials even when the slab itself remains intact.
Dekton and granite both resist scratches during normal kitchen use.
No countertop should take the place of a cutting board. Cutting directly on either material can dull knives, leave metal marks, and increase the chance of damaging an edge or finish.
Both materials can chip when struck along an exposed edge. Sink cutouts, cooktop openings, corners, and unsupported overhangs require particular care.
Dekton is exceptionally hard once installed, but that hardness can make the slab less forgiving during transportation and fabrication. It should be measured, cut, handled, and installed by professionals familiar with the product.
Granite can also crack when a slab contains natural fissures, receives a hard impact, or lacks proper support. A skilled fabricator should evaluate the slab and plan vulnerable areas before cutting begins.
Good material cannot compensate for poor fabrication or inadequate cabinet support. This is one reason we coordinate the countertop with the cabinetry and construction plan from the beginning.
Dekton has the advantage in stain resistance.
Its nonporous surface does not require sealing and resists absorption from common kitchen spills. That makes it appealing to homeowners who regularly cook with oils, wine, coffee, tomato sauce, or other substances that can discolor a porous surface.
Granite’s stain resistance varies. Some slabs are dense and absorb very little moisture. Others are more porous and benefit from a penetrating sealer.
Granite should not be sealed automatically on a fixed schedule. The Natural Stone Institute’s sealing guidance recommends evaluating the stone first because not every granite surface needs the same treatment.
Spills should still be cleaned promptly on either material. Low maintenance does not mean no cleaning.
Dekton requires less routine maintenance than granite.
For everyday care, Dekton can usually be cleaned with a soft cloth, water, and a suitable household cleaner. It does not require periodic sealing.
Granite is also easy to clean, but some slabs need resealing to reduce absorption. The required frequency depends on the stone, sealer, cleaning habits, and amount of use.
Granite may be a poor fit for someone who does not want to monitor the countertop or arrange future sealing. Dekton removes that task.
For a homeowner comfortable with occasional stone care, granite’s maintenance requirements are usually manageable.
Dekton commonly falls toward the upper end of countertop pricing. Its final cost can include the slab, specialized fabrication, transportation, installation, cutouts, edge treatment, and any additional support required by the design.
Granite has a wider price range. Cost depends on the stone’s availability, origin, color, pattern, slab size, thickness, and fabrication requirements. Some widely available granites may cost less than Dekton, while rare or visually distinctive slabs may cost considerably more.
