Aging-in-Place Curbless Shower Bathroom

This aging-in-place bathroom remodel was designed to improve accessibility while maintaining a thoughtful, design-forward aesthetic.

The existing space relied on a traditional tub and a tight layout that made daily use difficult as the homeowner's mobility needs changed.

By reconfiguring the room around a curbless shower and wider circulation paths, the new bathroom provides a safer, easier-to-use environment that supports aging-in-place without sacrificing aesthetics.

2025 Giveback Program Recipient

The Giveback program is an initiative by Lamont Bros. Design & Construction to use our expertise in home remodeling to make a meaningful impact in the community.

As the company has grown, we’ve continued to look for opportunities to support homeowners facing difficult circumstances—especially when their homes no longer meet their changing needs. Through the Giveback program, we partner with our team, trade partners, and suppliers to complete projects that improve safety, accessibility, and quality of life.

This bathroom remodel focused on helping the homeowner age in place with greater independence and confidence. By removing a difficult-to-access tub and replacing it with a curbless walk-in shower, widening access points, and incorporating supportive features like grab bars, the space was transformed into one that is both safe and empowering.

Like our first Giveback project, this remodel was made possible by a network of vendors and subcontractors who generously contributed their time, materials, and expertise—coming together around a shared goal of making a meaningful difference in someone’s daily life.

Project Goals

The primary goal of this remodel was to remove physical barriers and create a bathroom that could be used comfortably with a walker or other mobility aids.

Key priorities included:

  • Eliminating the tub step-over

  • Improving maneuverability

  • Integrating support features that make everyday routines safer.

While accessibility was the driver of the project, it was just as important that the design feel intentional and refined, demonstrating that accessible spaces can still be visually engaging and beautiful.

Unique Features

The centerpiece of the project is a curbless walk-in shower with a linear drain positioned along the back wall.

This system allows the shower floor to slope subtly toward the drain while remaining flush with the main bathroom floor, eliminating the need for a threshold.

Grab bars and accessible fixture placement provide additional stability, while a widened pocket door improves entry clearance for walkers or wheelchairs.

Together, these features create a bathroom that prioritizes safe, barrier-free movement throughout the space.

Accessible by Design

While accessibility drove the layout decisions, the design team used materials and lighting to elevate the overall experience of the space.

Staggered wall tile transitions from deep navy to soft sage and warm cream, adding visual depth without overwhelming the room.

An arched niche introduces a subtle architectural detail, while a new skylight brings natural light into the space, helping the bathroom feel brighter and more open than the previous layout.
