Pearl District High Rise Media Room Remodel

This media room and library sit inside a high-rise in Portland's Pearl District. Before this Portland home remodel, the space had loose, noisy bifold doors, blackout shades with visible light gaps, and a kitchen coffee nook that left little room for the built-in storage the homeowners actually needed.

We replaced the bifold doors with hinged doors in a wood tone that matches the kitchen, and rebuilt the window treatments with floor-to-ceiling blackout curtains designed to close the gaps the old shades left behind. The media room now centers on cherry cabinetry with a built-in murphy bed for overnight guests and a full kegerator setup with its own tap cabinet. Next door, the library carries the same cherry finish into dark wood shelving, with a projector, media components, and a small beverage station built in and hidden from view. Custom curtains, wallpaper, and layered lighting tie both rooms together.

Project Goals

Our goals for this project centered on function first, without sacrificing the character the family wanted throughout the space.

Build a media room that could support real entertaining, including a dedicated kegerator setup with a custom tap cabinet.
Add flexible guest accommodations through a built-in murphy bed, finished to match the room's cherry cabinetry.
Create a library that felt traditional and warm, with dark wood built-ins that could accommodate electronics without looking like a tech room.
Solve for a fully hidden projector installation, keeping ventilation and light clearance intact while concealing the equipment within the shelving.
Replace the existing bifold doors, which had become loose and noisy, with hinged doors finished in a warm wood tone that complements the adjacent kitchen.
Layer the lighting design across sconces, pendant fixtures, and integrated shelf and cabinet lighting, giving the room depth after dark.
