A Kitchen and Covered Deck Built for a Growing Family

This contemporary ranch home in Oregon City needed a kitchen that could keep up with a busy family and connect more naturally to the backyard. We reworked the kitchen around a spacious island, added an integrated pantry, and tied the indoor space to a new covered outdoor living area. The result is a single, easy flow between cooking, eating, and entertaining that suits large family gatherings.

Project Goals

The homeowners wanted a kitchen that worked harder for daily life and for hosting. A large island became the anchor of the new layout, giving the family a central spot to prep, gather, and serve. We also built in a dedicated pantry so everyday supplies stayed in the kitchen instead of out in the garage, which removed a daily inconvenience the family had lived with for years.

Beyond the kitchen remodel, the goal was to extend the living space outdoors. We designed a covered deck with a dedicated grilling station and a space for a hot tub, then connected it to the kitchen through a new exterior door so the two areas function as one. That connection lets the family move between indoor and outdoor entertaining without a break in the flow, which matters most when they have a crowd over.

Unique Features

Key features include:

  • Two-tone Crystal frameless cabinets with Simply White perimeter cabinets and a Dark Gray island, paired with oil rubbed bronze Amerock hardware.
  • Silestone quartz countertops in Pietra with a polished finish and a clean rounded edge.
  • A backsplash that combines white Emser Craft field tile with a Daltile Raine arabesque mosaic accent behind the range for a focal point.
  • A Kohler Whitehaven farmhouse sink with a Pfister pull-down faucet in Tuscan bronze.
  • Durable Evoke Vigor luxury vinyl plank flooring that holds up to heavy family traffic.
  • Undercabinet LED lighting that keeps the counters bright and the workspace usable after dark.
  • A covered cedar deck with hidden fasteners, aluminum balusters, and a natural Cabot's stain, built with a grilling station and a hot tub space for year-round outdoor use.
  • Velux skylights that bring daylight deep into the kitchen and adjoining spaces.

The finished home gives the family a kitchen that fits how they actually cook and host, plus a covered deck that makes the backyard usable through Oregon's wetter months. Indoors and out now read as one connected space designed for gathering.
